Buyer Beware

How Most Ticket Scams Work

Understanding the tactics scammers use to steal thousands from unsuspecting ticket buyers every day.

Every year, millions of dollars are stolen through ticket scams. These scams are so common that the FBI has an entire category dedicated to ticket fraud. Here's how they typically work:

The Classic "Too Good to Be True" Scam

1

The Hook: Amazing Prices

Scammers post tickets at prices 20-30% below market value on social media, Craigslist, or resale platforms. They create urgency: "Concert is tomorrow!" or "Price drops in 1 hour!"

2

The Screenshot

They send you a screenshot of the tickets. It looks legitimate—complete with barcodes, seat numbers, and venue details. You think you're protected because you "saw" the tickets.

3

The Payment Trap

They insist on Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App—payment methods with no buyer protection. "Friends and family" option only. They might even accept PayPal, but insist on "friends" mode to avoid fees.

4

The Disappearing Act

After payment, they either: (a) never transfer the tickets, (b) transfer fake/duplicate tickets, or (c) transfer real tickets then revoke them before the event. Either way, you show up to the venue and your tickets don't scan.

Advanced Scam Tactics

The "Transfer First, Pay Later" Reversal

Scammer agrees to transfer tickets first to build trust. They use a stolen Ticketmaster account to transfer legitimate tickets. You pay, then 24-48 hours later, the real account owner reports the tickets stolen. Ticketmaster revokes your tickets and you're left with nothing.

The Multiple Sale Scam

Scammer sells the same tickets to 5-10 different buyers using screenshots. Only one person (usually nobody) gets the real tickets. Everyone else shows up to the venue and learns they've been scammed.

The Fake Transfer Email

Scammer creates a fake email that looks exactly like a Ticketmaster or AXS transfer notification. Complete with logos, formatting, and fake tracking numbers. The link either goes to a phishing site or nowhere at all.

🚩 Red Flags to Watch For

  • Seller refuses to use official transfer methods
  • Only accepts payment apps with no buyer protection
  • Prices significantly below market value
  • Extreme urgency or pressure to pay immediately
  • Brand new social media accounts with no history
  • Refuses video call or additional verification
  • Can only show screenshots, not live ticket views
